Fire in New Boston destroyed woodworker Jon Brooks' workshop, life work

ArtSpider member Paul Bellefeuille just alerted us to this tragic story:

From WMUR's website:
A fast-moving fire early Monday morning in New Boston destroyed Jonathan Brooks' workshop and much of his life's work, but an outpouring of support may help the artist move on.

Brooks has turned wood into art for more than 40 years until a fire reduced his work to ashes. The fire destroyed his studio located up Pine Road from his home in New Boston.

"It's like a piece of my soul that's gone," Brooks said.

Here's a link to the Union Leader story.

As it says on Brooks' site:
All of Jon's tools, his 40 year collection of special wood, his entire studio and its contents were destroyed. It is every artist's fear and worst nightmare to have this kind of disaster happen.

In this hour of need, any contribution will be helpful for the reconstruction of a new studio. We are sending this personal plea to all who may be able to help out. Jon will rebuild and carry on; it is his life's mission to do so. But in this hard economy he will need all the support he can receive.

Contributions may be sent to:
Jon Brook's New Studio Project
Pine Road
New Boston, NH 03070
Please: Share this story around!

ArtSpider member
Rahel Limor:

ISRAEL IS REAL is a weekly community supported radio program that focuses on everything Israel. We broadcast every Friday from 9-10am on WSMN 1590. We also have a wonderful website where anyone can listen to our archived shows, hear the music we play and now, visit YOUR ART exhibition! We would like to offer you another venue and opportunity to exhibit your work.

HOW TO EXHIBIT YOUR WORK ON ISRAEL IS REAL!

Easy! When vending, artists usually buy a "booth" or "table".
To exhibit on the air, you become an ISRAEL IS REAL sponsor!
Here's how:
BASIC: Purchase a show for $55:
We create a separate "EXHIBITION" or "GALLERY" page on our website featuring YOUR ART for a full month. We also include a LINK to your website (and you create a link to us from your website). The LINK to your site will remain on our site even after the exhibition ends.

BASIC PLUS: Purchase a show PLUS an ADVERTISEMENT
For an additional $20 you can purchase a 30-second spoken ad which will be read by us during ONE WEEKLY broadcast.
You must provide us with the text! Feel free to purchase as many 30-second ads as you wish.

When you purchase a show and four 30-second ads (for a total of $135), we will interview you "LIVE" on the air where together we will promote your art!
The artists, and their work, do not necessarily have to be related to the show theme; however; we hope that the art would be "kosher" - meaning that it should not include anything lewd, so to speak. If you are interested in exhibiting your art work on ISRAEL IS REAL, please contact us by email or by phone at: (603) 672-3682. We can then work out details from there.

NH Media Makers - Best networking event?

We just received
this email from
John Herman:

Cool! Someone just said they voted for the NH Media Makers meet-up for for a NH Business Review's Best of Business Award in the Best Networking Event category (#54). I thought I would pass on the link to everyone else. Apparently you must vote in 20 categories for any one vote to count, but perhaps you could vote for your fellow fantastic NH Media Makers in the categories for photographers, web developers, real estate companies, and more!

Here's the link: http://www.bobawardsnh.com
Justine and I have been to several of the NHMM meetings, and have found them to be interesting, enjoyable, and a great place to make new connections. We encourage creative people to check out a meet-up sometime soon. And if you've been to one of their meetings, we urge you to vote as John suggests!

Susan Wei lives in Ashland, with her cat and her husband and helpmate, Philip. She has been sewing and drawing and painting since her childhood. In the last few years this has come together for her in the combining of these skills to create unique textile art. She loves to try new things and challenge herself in untried techniques and combinations. Her work is most often filled with textiles she has dyed and painted herself and embellished with beads, feathers, yarns and threads, buttons and found objects.

Susan has exhibited her work locally and in many other states, including New Mexico, Ohio, Arizona, and most recently at the Whistler museum in Lowell, MA.

Penny Burke

Penny Burke lives in New Hampton on Lake Winona with husband Ray. She is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire, class of 1973, with a BA in Art. Among her favorite studies were 3 semesters of figure drawing with Prof Sigmund Abeles.

Penny is a two dimentional artist working with oil or graphite medium. Oil paintings are created on stretched and gallery wrap canvas or genuine Vermont Slate. Prints and notecards are available from most of her work.

Many of the oil paintings depict areas of New England including the seacoast, lakes region and mountains. Warm fall colors, rolling fog from the hills and lakes, a lighthouse, boathouse, someone's home or a sugar shack are amoung her subjects. Her passion for dogs can be found in graphite portraits. Commissioned work is always welcomed.

Fred Nold

With his work displayed in numerous private and museum collections worldwide, artist Fred Nold brings a whimsical vibrancy to his work. After graduation from Parsons School of Design and New York University with a degree in fine art, Fred honed his skills and style with the surrounds of the Hudson River. While in New York, he hosted the "State of the Art" television show, a series dedicated to supporting artists and their endeavors. The New York Times stated that Nold's brush strokes are both bold in color and flair, yet gently evoke the true ambience of his subjects. The artist presents shows and paints in Naples, Florida and New Hampshire.

NHBCA seeks nominations

New Hampshire

Business Committee for the Arts

2010 Business in the Arts Awards

Nominations Deadline:
Friday, February 5, 2010

Nominations are now open for the 2010 Business in the Arts Awards, sponsored annually by the New Hampshire Business Committee for the Arts to publicly recognize and honor businesses and a business leader that have had significant impact on the state’s arts and cultural environment.

Anyone may make a nomination! Arts organizations and artists are encouraged to nominate their favorite businesses. Businesses are encouraged to self-nominate. Many businesses donate time and financial support to the arts community in relative anonymity. Nominating a deserving business and/or individual for a Business in the Arts Award is a simple act that demonstrates appreciation, generates good will, and helps bring attention to the exemplary partnerships formed between the arts and these businesses and individuals. The winners will be announced at the Awards banquet on May 17.

To nominate a business or business leader:
§ Click on “Our Programs / Business in the Arts Awards”
§ Click on the option of your choice: “Nominate Online Right Now” or “Printer-friendly Nomination Form”
OR
§ Print the Awards Criteria and Nomination forms from the attachment to this email and mail your nomination to the NHBCA, One Granite Place, Concord, NH 03301.

Support of the arts may take the form of sponsorships or cash donations, volunteer involvement, in-kind goods and/or professional services, and/or advertising, marketing, or public affairs campaigns, as well as other activities.

The awards are divided into categories of size — small (fewer than 50 NH employees) medium (50-500 employees) and large (more than 500 employees) — so a small business is not judged against a large one. Support doesn’t have to be fancy or unusual. Winning nominations often contain descriptive action such as “consistent” and “thankful.”

Complete information, including previous winners, is contained in the Awards Criteria.

If you need more information or assistance with downloading or submitting nominations, please don’t hesitate to contact the NHBCA at arts@nhbca.com or 603 224-8300.
